Damiano performed at the Spanish festival of Bilbao last night (July 12). The local El Correo wrote:
Damiano David, the former charismatic frontman of Måneskin, was in charge of closing this year’s edition of BBK Live. He did so as a solo star, ten minutes later than scheduled, with a stage full of musicians, his name projected in the background, and an opening song, “The First Time,” which quickly set the tone for the show: intimate, melodic, and quite far from the explosive rock that made him world-famous. He emerged through smoke, wearing a striped shirt and a blue scarf, in a look more reminiscent of Harry Styles than his years with the Italian band.
The Nagusia stage was packed—not just out of anticipation, but also because it was the festival’s last big concert. However, the beginning felt a bit lukewarm. With “Voices” and “Tango,” Damiano delivered a polished yet restrained performance, with minimalist visuals, little audience interaction, and a somewhat predictable stage presence. He greeted the crowd in English, but also threw in a “Hola a todo el mundo, qué tal” before joking in Spanglish: “It’s my first big show as a single man… I mean, as a solo artist.”
The concert gradually picked up energy, especially when he performed “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” by Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus—one of the few songs the crowd sang along to with real enthusiasm. During “Zombie Lady,” he shared the spotlight with one of his backup singers, showing once again that his voice and presence remain as strong as ever. He also performed “Too Sweet” by Hozier and several tracks from his debut album, such as “Angel” and the romantic “Tangerine,” which he dedicated “to his beautiful girlfriend,” Dove Cameron.
The most anticipated moment came with “Born With a Broken Heart,” his most popular song to date, with over 140 million streams. While fans saw it as a gift, those discovering his music for the first time may have found the performance somewhat flat. Damiano explained that this album represents what he truly wants to do, without needing to justify his shift in style. He closed with “No One Understands Me,” a confessional track in which he directly addresses criticism over his artistic change: “Even I don’t know why I’ve changed,” he said.
As expected, no Måneskin songs were performed. This wasn’t a nostalgia concert—it was a clear attempt to assert himself as an independent pop artist. The result: a solid, professional farewell with dedicated fans, but one that leaves lingering questions about whether this new chapter has enough pull to carry the weight of the name that came before it.
